Functional Medicine and Nutrition
Functional medicine is the idea we should first make sure that the body has everything that it needs to function properly before any other medical intervention.
So often, what we perceive as disease is simply the body’s attempt to adapt to the existing situation. It is physiology, not pathology.
We can recognize that a wilted plant needs water, but we may not realize that our high blood pressure or muscle tension or lack of mental focus is simply dehydration.
The human body has a great capacity to adapt, but we cannot deny our basic needs of oxygen, water, nutrition, restorative sleep, and movement indefinitely. It tries to tell us what it needs. We need only to learn to recognize its messages.
